The two-time Haggerty Award winner for the top player in the New York Metropolitan area, finished the game scoring 19 points and adding eight assists but the day was bittersweet for Jenkins. “I am more concerned about winning,” said Jenkins. “If we won, I would have been the happiest person in the gym.” Following a difficult loss to visiting Drexel University, Jenkins total of 2,280 points surpassed Agudio’s record of 2,276 which was set back in the 2007-2008 season. The previous record of 2,222 points was set by Steve Nisenson in 1965 and remained unbeaten for over 40 years. Jenkins was a freshman during Agudio's senior year and appreciated the support he received from the upperclassman during their year together. “He took me under his wing,” said Jenkins. “It really meant a lot to me.” Following the 2009-2010 season, Jenkins was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. The Queens native was also an Honorable Mention AP All-American and only the ninth player in the 77-year history of the Haggerty Award to win the honor twice. Putting aside his long list of accolades, Jenkins may be best remembered following his playing days for what he has meant to the Hofstra program. “Breaking the scoring record is one of the many amazing accomplishments that Charles has achieved,” remarked head coach Mo Cassara. “His commitment to his team, this university and the development of this team is what college basketball is all about. I am so happy for Charles and his family as he continues to achieve great things on and off the court.” During his first three seasons at Hofstra, Jenkins was coached by current Fordham University head coach Tom Pecora. The former Pride coach praised the standout guard following the game. “I spoke with Charles after the game and congratulated him on his tremendous accomplishment,” said Pecora. “It’s a well deserved honor for him and his family. He is a great player and one of the best players I’ve have the pleasure to coach.” Currently, Jenkins has the highest point total of any active player in the nation in college basketball. |
