The New York Islanders announced that they have removed the “interim” label from Head Coach Jack Capuano’s title.  As per club policy, the terms and conditions of Capuano’s contract are not disclosed.

Head Coach Jack Capuano

“We have made tremendous strides as a team this season under Jack’s direction and I’m confident that he’s the right person to lead the Islanders into the playoffs,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “Jack’s work ethic and familiarity with the numerous players on our roster has eased his adjustment to the NHL and we look forward to him taking the Islanders to the next level.”

Capuano was named the Interim Head Coach of the Islanders on Nov. 15, 2010. The first-year coach led the Islanders to a 26-29-10 record this season, including a 25-21-8 mark in their final 54 games and a 15-12-6 record after the All-Star Break.

“I’m extremely excited to remain the Head Coach of the Islanders,” Capuano said.  “The organization has built a tremendous core of players here and I look forward to helping the Islanders become a consistent contender for years to come.”

Prior to Capuano’s NHL head coaching debut on Nov. 17, he served as the Head Coach of the Islanders’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  For the past four seasons, the Cranston, RI native, led the Sound Tigers to a 133-100-8-14 career mark.

Capuano joined the Islanders organization in the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach. From 1997-2005 he served as the General Manager of the Pee Dee Pride of the ECHL. As General Manager and while serving several stints as head coach, Capuano led the Pride to a record of 312-206-52. In 1998-99, Capuano coached Pee Dee to a regular season record of 51-14-4 and led them to the ECHL Final.

Islanders Trade Wisniewski To Montreal
Tuesday, 04 January 2011 15:07

By Geri Falzon

Back in October at Madison Square Garden, newly acquired James Wisniewski made inappropriate gestures to Rangers’ left-winger Sean Avery following some post-whistle pushing. His lewd behavior resulted in a two-game suspension and may have influenced the Islanders decision to move the defenseman north of the border – or it’s another sign the team has realized diminishing playoff hopes may lead to the moving of veterans.

Tavares In ActionBy Jason Levy

New York is full of rivalries. Fans are presented with multiple choices of teams to root for. The Jets and Giants share a stadium. The Mets and Yankees play annually and have met to decide the championship. But the Islanders and Rangers are the only New York teams that share a division, which arguably makes them the fiercest of all the New York-New York rivalries. The first Islanders-Rangers game of the 2009-2010 season at the Nassau Coliseum featured an evenly-split crowd and an electric atmosphere that gave the Islanders some extra energy they would ride to a 3-1 win, their second victory of the season.
