The New York Islanders will officially hit the ice on Wednesday September 29th as they begin a five game pre-season schedule which will include venues in Saskatoon, SASK, Quebec City, Newark and the Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders come off a season where youth took center stage as 2010 All-Rookie team selection John Tavares led the team in points (54) scoring 24 goals while assisting on 30 others. Right-winger Kyle Okposo finished second on the team with 52 total points. The 22 year-old scored 19 goals on the season while adding 32 assists.
Experience lent a helping hand as well, as defenseman Mark Streit totaled 49 points on 11 goals and 38 assists. Matt Moulson led the team in goals as he netted the puck 30 times. The 26 year-old left-winger added 18 assists totaling 48 points for the season.
With the addition of draft pick Nino Niederreiter, the youth movement continues as the Islanders look to a very bright future. Niederreiter, a Chur, Switzerland native, is coming off a season where he led the WHL Portland Winterhawks in goals (36) while adding 24 assists totaling 60 points in 65 games. The 18 year-old center, was also selected to the WHL Western Conference Second All-Star team.
The Isles will open their pre-season schedule with a pair of split-squad games. The first matchup will take place at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, SASK, when they face-off against the Calgary Flames. The Islanders second split-squad game will take place at the Wachovia Center against and the defending Eastern Conference Champion Philadelphia Flyers. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. local times.
The third game of the preseason is set for Friday, October 1 as they take on the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The scheduled time is 7 p.m.
On Saturday night October 2nd, the Islanders will play another pair of split-squad games as they finish up their pre-season contests. In the second part of a home-and-home matchup, one Islanders team will take on the Devils at the Nassau Coliseum. On the same evening, the Islanders second squad will take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City. Face-off for both games is set at 7 p.m.
On Satuday, October 9th the Islanders open up the 2010-11 regular season as they face-off against the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m. The New York Rangers come into the Nassau Coliseum two days later for an afternoon game as the cross-town rivalry heats back up. The Rangers visit the Islanders on two other dates with night games on December 2nd and March 31st.
The Philadelphia Flyers come to Long Island on Saturday, November 6th, Sunday, December 5th and finally on Saturday, March 26th. The Pittsburgh Penguins and make three trips to the Nassau Coliseum playing games on Wednesday, December 29th, Saturday, February 12th and Sunday, March 6th.
The defending Presidents Trophy winning Washington Capitals make two trips to the Coliseum facing off on Friday, November 26th and then again on Saturday, February 26th.
Two games are scheduled during the holidays as the New Jersey Devils will battle on the Islanders’ home ice for the first time the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 26, for a 1 p.m. showdown. On the day after Christmas, Sunday, December 26, the Montreal Canadiens visit the Coliseum for an evening contest at 7 p.m.
